How often is Tableau Server upgraded and what version is it currently running?

You can check the version that Tableau Server is currently running by logging into the server, then clicking on the i → About Tableau Server located in the upper right corner of the browser window:

Then an About window will appear with the release number (2018.3.1 in this case):

It’s our goal to keep the Tableau Server within one major release from the latest release (essentially skipping every other release – depending upon the functionality the release delivers). Tableau is on quarterly release cycle, so upgrades would be applied to PATH's Tableau Server(s) roughly every 6 months or more frequently. For example, if the current Server version is Tableau 2018.3 and Tableau introduces 2019.1 (we would skip this version), and then they introduce 2019.2, we would plan to install this version once we have tested & validated that it is stable.

We will upgrade more often if:

  • There are security issues addressed in a major or minor release.

  • A minor release fixes issues experienced by PATH users or partners.

  • A major release introduces new functionality that PATH users have requested or is deemed to enhance user experience.
