I can't print

I can't print

Problem

You try to print and you get an error message or there's no output from the printer.  There are several things you can do to troubleshoot misbehaving network printers.  While this may seem obvious, make sure the printer is on and has paper.

Solution

Test to see if others can print to the printer or if you can print to a different printer.

  1. If others can print to the printer, but you cannot, it may indicate a problem on your computer.
  2. Save any open documents, restart your computer and try printing again.
  3. Try printing to a different printer. If you can, it may be a problem with the printer driver for the printer that's not working.
  4. Make sure you have permissions to print to that printer. Some departments like Legal, Travel and HR restrict usage of their printers.
  5. Make sure you're printing to the printer you think you're printing to. You may be inadvertently printing to a different printer.
  6. Finally, remove the printer and add it back. Go to Devices and Computers, select the printer and click Remove. Add the printer back using the instructions in this how-to guide: How to install a network printer in a PATH office.
