How can I share visualizations on Tableau Server?

This article describes how to request a presence on Tableau Server for your department or team so that you can publish visualizations to be shared with others.

Can anyone create a visualization to post on the server?

In order to author visualizations, you must have a Tableau Desktop license. If you do not currently have one, please see How do I get a Tableau Desktop License?

How can I post into my group's project on Tableau Server?

You must be granted permissions to publish visualizations to the server. Typically, each group (department, program or project) will have a primary point person that works as liaison with Information Technology (IT) to initially set up a sandbox (development) project and a publishing project for your group. If your group already has a presence on Tableau Server, please contact your group’s project owner to discuss your publishing needs. Either s/he can publish on your behalf, or can work with IT to establish publishing permissions for you.

How can I request a presence on Tableau Server for my group?

If your group does not already have a primary point person to work as liaison with IT, please determine who will perform that role, and then have them follow the step-by-step process below.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Log into the IT Service Desk portal and go to Help accessing:  → Get help accessing online services.

  2. Submit a request asking to establish a presence on Tableau Server for your group. Please include the following information:

Title = Tableau Server Project Setup Request for <Project/Department/Group Name>

In the body of the request, please include:

    • Brief overview/description of the types of visualizations you would like to share.
    • Brief overview/description of the audience(s) with whom you want to share the visualizations. If there is a known Active Directory group or Distribution List that represents the audience, please include the name of the group/list. Otherwise, please include a list of the names of those that should have visibility to the published visualizations project on Tableau Server.
    • List of authors that should have the ability to publish into the primary project. (Note: these individuals should have Tableau Desktop licenses). If there is a known Active Directory group or Distribution List that represents the authors, please include the name of the group/list. Otherwise, please include a list of the names.
    • List of authors that should have ability to publish into the associated sandbox (test/development) project. (Note: these individuals should have Tableau Desktop licenses). If there is a known Active Directory group or Distribution List that represents the authors, please include the name of the group/list. Otherwise, please include a list of the names.

  3. After receipt of the Help Desk request, a member of the Tableau team in IT at PATH will contact you with any questions or to communicate the completion of your request.
