How to change ownership of folders in Box

When you create a folder in Box, you are the folder's owner.  You may need to transfer ownership of the folder if you leave a project, a team or if you leave PATH.  This how-to explains how to change a folder's owner.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Log into Box via work.path.org.
  2. Navigate to the folder you would like to change the owner of (1).  If nobody has been invited to collaborate on the folder, you will first need to invite someone to the folder and then make him or her the owner.
  3. From the Sharing tab on the right, select the person you'd like to make the owner (2) and change his or her permission to owner (3), as shown below.

  4. Once you set a new owner, you will lose ownership of the folder and become an editor, effectively transferring ownership of the folder.

How to tell if others are invited to a folder

A folder that doesn't have anyone else invited to it (a private folder) appears with a manilla icon:

A folder that has others invited to it will appear with a blue folder icon:   These are the only folders you can change the owner of.
